SIM lock:

A sim-lock, Network-Lock, CARRIER LOCK, imei-lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock is a technical limitation built into CDMA and GSM phones by producers for use by service providers to restrict the use of these phones to particular locations and/or networks. This is not like a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't impose any SIM limitations.SIM locking is very common if subsidized devices are offered with pre pay contracts. You should to note, however, that this technology linked with the cell phone will have to be compatible with the system being employed by the network carrier. A GSM cellular phone will only operate with a GSM carrier and is not going to operate on a CDMA service. Moreover, a CDMA smartphone can only work with a CDMA service and will never function on a GSM service. Take note that new (2013 and newer) pricier mobiles are capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM technologies, allowing for customers to utilize their smart phones on virtually any network.

Unlocking Technology:

Usually, a locked smartphone will display a message if a restricted SIM is used, requesting the unlock code. On new phone models running Android operating system software, the phone should show a message stating “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it is network locked. Windows phones should show the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Several other devices could display varying messages which include "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some circumstances the mobile will simply show a message saying that it is locked. Right after a valid code is keyed in, the mobile phone will display "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

Mobile handset makers have monetary incentives both to enhance SIM lock protection (which placates mobile phone network companies and enables exclusivity deals) as well as to weaken it (widening a mobile's overall appeal to customers who typically are not interested in the provider that offers it). Also, making it very hard to unlock a device might make it significantly less attractive to mobile phone network service providers who have a legal responsibility to provide unlock codes for certain handsets or in selected countries.

Unlocking Services:

A few businesses provide a permanent smartphone unlocking service . This service needs all those that would like to unlock a device to give their IMEI number to a service supplier and sometimes they will also need the country and service provider the device is locked to, often sent through email or submitted on their web-site. The supplier then will provide (in return for a fee) an unlock code for the mobile. For a few manufacturers as in Nokia and Samsung several services additionally provide unique remote-unlocking software with directions, where a cable connection is required to remove the SIM lock from home. Such organizations may email the unlocking code or software that should remotely unlock the unit. The cost for unlocking a cellphone will certainly differ dependent upon the mobile phone network it is locked to and the device model itself, as each unlock code is unique to each unique device.

Unlocking Service Providers:

Unfortunately there are many of dodgy organizations working in the smartphone IMEI unlocking industry. Consequently it is recommended to be sure you use a trustworthy provider for these services. To assist with a search for a reputable service provider, we've supplied an inventory beneath (and in no specific order) of a few genuine organisations currently offering such services.
